Message of the Surveyor General
The Institute of surveying and Mapping which was established on 1967 is the training wing and the research centre of the Survey Department of Sri Lanka. This institute has played a vital role in providing initial training for all technical officers in the Survey Department and conducting continuous professional development courses for the technical officers to upgrade their knowledge in par with emerging technologies in the field of land surveying and geo informatics.
It offers various diplomas, certificates and short term courses and a bachelor degree program in surveying sciences, which is recognized by the University Grant Commission of Sri Lanka. In addition, it also provide diploma in cartography, diploma in photogrammetry and higher diploma course in surveying sciences for the enhancement of the knowledge of the technical officers of the Survey Department. The institute is furnished with latest surveying equipment and state of art computer laboratory with latest editions of assorted software related to Land Surveying and Geo Informatics. The technical library of the institute housed wide spectrum of books and magazines related to surveying and allied subjects. Another key feature proudly hosted by the Institute of Surveying and Mapping is Dr. R. L. Brohier memorial museum. This museum proudly presents a rare collection of surveying and mapping instruments dating back to 1800. The Institute of Surveying and Mapping is located in picturesque location at Diyatalawa with moderate climate and healthy environment. It provides accommodation facilities and recreational facilities for students as most of the courses are held in-house.
As the Surveyor General of the Survey Department, I wish the Institute of Surveying and Mapping to be the focal point of land management education in south Asia.
